Basking Ridge Family's Sole Provider Dies Suddenly, Leaves Behind Autistic Son
A GoFundMe has been set up for the McKenna family after Steve, the sole provider and caretaker for their son with extreme autism, died.
BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A longtime Basking Ridge family is in need after their husband, father, and sole provider died suddenly from a heart attack earlier this month.
A GoFundMe fundraising website has been set up for the family following Steve McKenna's death on Sept. 9.
"Steve was the sole provider for their family and, most importantly, a caretaker for their son Patrick, 31 years old with extreme autism. He is nonverbal and will need care for the rest of his life," said Pam Frigo, a longtime friend of the family who set up the fundraiser.

The fundraiser is looking to raise $30,000 to help care for Patrick.
"I am asking you from the bottom of my heart to help this family by donating to Patrick's long-term care," said Frigo.

Steve was remembered for being a "shining light who drew many to him, with his welcoming smile and humor."
Most of all, being with his cherished family was his dream life, whether it was laughing at their many jokes, watching movies, going on adventures, or hiking, according to his obituary with Gallaway and Crane.
"The most important part of Steve’s life was his family. The love of his life was Mary, for 40 years, and together they raised three beautiful children (Patrick, Caroline and Owen) with all the love and encouragement he learned from his own upbringing," according to the obituary. "Steve’s desire was to always be there for his wife and children, and he achieved that goal with aplomb."
