Bloomfield Hydrant Flushing Begins, Discoloration May Happen

It's part of routine and mandatory maintenance, Bloomfield officials say. Here's when the process is expected to be finished.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield will be flushing its fire hydrants starting on Monday. The routine and mandatory maintenance will run through Sept. 19, officials said.

Here’s what to expect, municipal officials said:

“During flushing, residents may notice temporary discoloration in their water. Excess sediment can accumulate in household filters, which may reduce filter life. Filters may be reinstalled after flushing in your area is complete.”

Approximately 1,200 fire hydrants throughout Bloomfield will be flushed during this process, which is expected to take about five months to complete.

Routine hydrant flushing is mandated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the National Fire Protection Association to remove sediment to improve drinking water quality, as well as ensure that hydrants are operating correctly in the event of an emergency.

Residents can find a list of locations and scheduled flushing dates at the township website.
