Mayor Michael Venezia and the Township of Bloomfield are encouraging all residents to sign up for free lead testing of their home or apartment through the local nonprofit organization La Casa De Don Pedro.
“Lead poisoning is a slow and silent killer that can have a tremendous impact on the development of children,” said Mayor Venezia. “While we no longer use lead paint in our homes, it can still be present from decades past which is why we must be so vigilant in its identification and removal. I encourage all Bloomfield residents to take full advantage of this free program to ensure your family’s safety and health.”

Lead was used in paint on homes built before 1978 and can be found on windows, doors, walls, and floors, and high lead levels can cause attention, behavioral, and learning deficiencies in children. Beginning in July 2022, rental units are required to have received a Lead-Safe Certificate ensuring their safety.
In addition to offering preliminary testing to determine if lead is present on painted surfaces in residents’ homes, La Casa De Don Pedro will also provide free remediation and abatement of any hazards for qualifying families, as well as education on how to keep your home and family safe from lead. For more information or to apply for the Lead Assistance Program, contact La Casa De Don Pedro at their office at 973-485-0701 or call Bloomfield Human Services at 973-680-4017.
