How To Help Bloomfield Families Impacted By SNAP Cuts, Government Furloughs

Efforts are underway to help Bloomfield residents impacted by the upcoming suspension of SNAP benefits or the government shutdown.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- Efforts are underway to help Bloomfield residents who will be impacted by the upcoming suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or local furloughed federal workers struggling under the ongoing government shutdown.

The USDA has confirmed it will suspend SNAP payments beginning Nov. 1 because of the ongoing government shutdown.

There were 812,966 people receiving SNAP benefits in New Jersey as of August, representing 436,452 households; 340,425 children, and 176,706 elderly individuals, according to a lawsuit filed by multiple states.

According to a news release from the township, Bloomfield residents whose SNAP benefits are suspended – or furloughed federal employees – can find aid at two local resources:

  • Bloomfield Special Food Pantry (Hosted by Toni’s Kitchen), Bloomfield Public Library Courtyard, Sundays starting Nov. 2 from 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Human Needs Food Pantry, 9 Label St., Montclair, Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Register early: humanneedsfoodpantry.org or 973-746-4669.

Bloomfield is running an “adopt a family” program to help local residents impacted by the above issues. People can help by buying groceries, making a donation to the Neighbor to Neighbor Network NJ Food Insecurity Fund, or donating a gift card for a local supermarket or food establishment.
