New Owners Buy Bloomfield, Newark ShopRites From Longtime Grocer
"I have made the difficult decision to leave the supermarket industry," Neil Greenstein said, adding that the two stores are in good hands.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — There’s a new owner of the ShopRite supermarkets in Bloomfield and Newark, but the grocery stores will remain a family-run business.
On Wednesday, Glass Gardens Inc. – which is owned and operated by the Glass family – announced that it has purchased Brookdale ShopRite in Bloomfield and the ShopRite of Newark from longtime owner and operator Neil Greenstein.
Both the Glass and Greenstein families are members of the Wakefern Food Corp. supermarket cooperative, whose 45 members independently own and operate hundreds of supermarkets under the ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Dearborn Market, Gourmet Garage, Fairway Market and Di Bruno Bros. banners.

“I have made the difficult decision to leave the supermarket industry and sell my company to another member of our ShopRite and Wakefern family who will build on our success and grow and expand the business,” Greenstein said.

“I want to thank our loyal customers and dedicated associates for their years of dedication to our company,” Greenstein added. “I know the store is in good hands with Glass Gardens and the Glass family at the helm.”
Greenstein’s grandparents joined the Wakefern cooperative in 1952 and opened a ShopRite in Bloomfield. He grew up working his grandparents’ store, eventually expanding the family business in 2015 when he opened a second store, the ShopRite of Newark.

Customers can expect all their favorite departments – and the same sales, promotions and customer service – at both store locations, Glass Gardens said.
Here’s some background on the new owners:
“The Glass family got started in the grocery business when two brothers, Ben and Abe Glass, opened a produce concession in 1938. Abe was drafted into World War II and Ben ran the concession until Abe returned home. The two men joined Wakefern in 1955 and opened their first ShopRite in Rochelle Park. Today, the business is led by cousins Irv and Terry Glass. Irv’s two sons, Daniel Glass and Andrew Kent, and Terry’s daughter, Karen Holbrook, all serve as executive vice presidents in the family business. Andrew also recently wrapped up a three-year term as chairman of the New Jersey Food Council.”
“Neil Greenstein and his retail teams have been dedicated to customer and community service, and we are proud to continue those traditions as we welcome the stores and associates into our family of supermarkets,” said Terry Glass, co-CEO and co-president of Glass Gardens.
“Both our families share a love of the supermarket business, and we look forward to continuing the legacy of Brookdale ShopRite and the ShopRite of Newark,” Glass said.
