Summary- Over a hundred and fifty years before the American Constitution, the friendship of three women in Boston, Massachusetts, inspired faith and courage to imagine freedom of religion and a more compassionate community. Abuse that was meant to reduce their influence, instead empowered their resolve to challenge injustice and demand liberty. For over twenty-five years, multiple trials, imprisonment, exile, kidnapping, murder, starvation, a hidden grave, betrayal, and even a hanging did not stop what these women had begun. Theirs is the oldest documented activism demanding liberty of conscience, religion, and speech and was used as a reference for our First Amendment. As a public-school teacher, Margaret Cotton was awarded a NEH grant for independent study over thirty years ago.
