Alleged Hoagie Thieves Strike Collingswood Wawa

A pair of reported shoplifting incidents at the Collingswood Wawa brought police to the borough convenience store in early October to apprehend some alleged hoagie thieves.

On October 2 at 8 p.m., the manager of the Haddon Avenue Wawa reported that a patron had purchased a pack of crackers and ordered a hoagie, but left without paying for it.

Police were able to track down the customer, who they said appeared intoxicated. The patron reportedly did not remember not paying for the sandwich, and returned to settle his tab without incident.

Less amicably resolved was the case of 52-year-old Edward Basso of Collingswood, whom police say fled from the store at 9:20 a.m. October 4, allegedly without paying for two Italian hoagies, valued at $11.

Police located Basso on the street, and he voluntarily admitted that he had discarded the sandwiches in a trash can prior to being approached by the officer. Basso was charged with shoplifting and was released pending a court date.
