CamCo Man Sentenced to 23 Years for Kidnapping, Carjacking

Weeks after pleading guilty to the kidnapping and carjacking of two female cab drivers in 2006, Jason Handy, 33, of Blackwood, was sentenced to 23 years in New Jersey state prison, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office reported Friday.

The sentence was handed down by Superior Court Judge Samuel Natal, and Handy must serve 85 percent of it—or 19-and-a-half years—before he can become eligible for parole.

Handy assaulted the first cab driver at knifepoint on March 28, 2006, in Gloucester Township. He bound and gagged the victim, locked her in the trunk of the cab, and then drove in to Camden City, where he abandoned the vehicle with the woman still inside.

On May 1, 2006, Handy mounted a similar attack against a woman in Lindenwold; that victim escaped as he tried to put her in the trunk. Both women eventually freed themselves and reported the attacks to police.

Handy went free for three years before DNA evidence from a 2009 conviction pegged him to the assaults; that sample matched evidence collected from the 2006 abductions.
