Collingswood F.D. Subdues Fire on E. Knight Wednesday Morning

An early-morning house fire in the 100 block of East Knight Avenue dealt significant damage to a duplex on the street, but ultimately, no injuries.

Collingswood firefighters received a call at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and were on the scene within three minutes, said Fire Chief Keith Davis.

When they arrived, Davis said, there was smoke showing from the residence and heavy fire within.

Collingswood firefighters put out an all-hands call and were backed up by companies from Haddonfield, Haddon Township, Cherry Hill, Pennsauken and Gloucester City.

Despite some extension of the blaze into the upper floors of the building, responding companies knocked the fire down pretty quickly, Davis said. Neighboring and adjoining structures suffered some smoke damage as well.

The occupants of the home had been evacuated by the time emergency workers arrive, Davis said; the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The significance of being called to a job on the morning of September 11 wasn't lost on anyone there, either.

"Every day is a new day," Davis said. "We like to remember the fallen people from that day all across the country, but we still have a job to do.

"We've still got to go to work," he said.
