Collingswood Job-Seeker Victimized in Craigslist Fraud

Police say the man is out $4,000 thanks to an online scammer.

A Collingswood resident who was answering help wanted ads on Craigslist found himself the victim of a check-cashing scheme that ended up costing him $4,000.

Collingswood Police were notified Feb. 6 of the incident, in which the victim was corresponding with an out-of-state contact who purported to be offering a driver's job. At some point in their exchange, the victim was asked to deposit checks into his personal bank account and forward the cash to the sender.

The checks, it turns out, were fraudulent, and the victim lost $4,000 in the exchange. Police say the investigation is active and they are working to identify the individual behind the act.
