Rabid Skunk Found in Cherry Hill

A skunk that came in contact with a Cherry Hill resident’s dog tested positive for rabies after being brought in for testing, Camden County officials said.

The animal was killed after the incident, officials said, and was picked up by Cherry Hill’s animal control on Sunday to be tested for the disease.

The dog was up-to-date with its rabies vaccine, officials said, and has been given preventative treatment by a veterinarian.

County officials didn’t say specifically where in the township the skunk was found.

“Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment,” said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Health Department. “If you have been bitten or scratched by a wild animal, it is important that you seek immediate medical attention.”
