Some People Don't Catch On: Police Blotter

Collingswood Police were willing to cut a Berlin woman a break after she was pulled over for motor vehicle violations—until she tested them a second time within half an hour.

If a police officer decides to cut you a break, you should probably consider yourself lucky and tighten up.

But apparently, a Berlin woman who was allegedly pulled over for driving without brake lights—or a current license—didn't get the memo.

At 11 a.m. on April 4, while on patrol in the area of Route 130 and the White Horse Pike, Collingswood police say they pulled over a Saturn with non-functioning brake lights.

The driver, Sharon Powers, 32, of Berlin, was also in possession of an expired driver license, police say.

Powers told the officer that she was meeting a friend for breakfast at the nearby Collingswood Diner. The officer issued her a verbal warning instead of a citation, and suggested to Powers that she leave her car at the diner until a driver with a valid license could operate it.

Approximately 20 minutes later, however, the same officer encountered Powers driving in the area of Ferry Ave.

Her driver's license was still expired—but in the time since, police say, she had picked up 10 clear plastic Ziploc baggies they believe contained heroin.

Powers was charged with motor vehicle offenses and third-degree possession of a controlled, dangerous substance. Her vehicle was impounded and she was released on summonses.
