Cat Food Recalled by Missouri Company

Missouri-based Diamond Pet Foods announced a recall of a variety of its cat food products after tests found they contained a low level of vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, according to published reports.

The company has alerted customers in 25 states it serves, including New Jersey, continued use of the food may lead to thiamine deficiency in cats, the NJ.com report said.

Thiamine regulates the nervous system functions, according to a press release from BluePearl Veterinary Partners. The lack of this vitamin could result in decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss in cats.

A company press release posted on NorthJersey.com says the recall affects certain bags of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Senior Cat Hairball Management Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Kitten Formula dry cat food, Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula dry cat food and 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula dry cat food.

The company said customers with the product should discard or return it, and cats who ate the food and are showing any symptoms should see a veterinarian.
