National Artist Creates Silhouette Portraits in Cranford

Silhouette artist, Clay Rice, completed over 40 portraits at Periwinkle's on Thursday.

Nationally known silhouette artist, Clay Rice, created over 40 portraits at Periwinkle's in Cranford on Thursday.

Rice creates each silhouette in less than five minutes.

"These silhouettes can last as an heirloom of you or your child for years to come," owner of Periwinkle's, Elaine Moffett, said.

Rice’s book, “The Lonely Shadow”, has won two children’s awards. At 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. he sang, with guitar, the award-winning book, as well as introduce his second book “Mama lets make a Moon.” Rice added that his third book is due out this spring.

Moffett said that the store was pretty booked with appointments throughout the day. Between 40 to 45 people came in to have portraits done, while a handful of other submitted photos for Rice to create silhouettes from.

One father brought his daughter for the third year in a row, while another mother brought her two young sons for the first time. One Cranford resident brought in a photo of a bride and groom to have a silhouette created as their first wedding anniversary gift.
