Union County Bringing Expungement Clinic To Kean University

Records may be removed due to time and other qualifications.

UNION, NJ — All New Jersey residents convicted of crimes may be eligible to have their offense (s) removed from their records on Saturday at Kean University.

Arrests, convictions, juvenile adjudications, sentence details, and all other court proceedings related to the case may be able to be expunged. This, the state says, is in an effort to help people rebuild their lives through employment opportunities, housing opportunities, and access to financial resources.

Crimes such as most homicides, robbery, and kidnapping are never eligible to be cleared.

Once a record is cleaned, the arrest or conviction is "deemed to not have occurred," according to event information shared by Union County. This includes, under most situations, being able to legally deny that the expunged contacts with the system ever occurred.

Those who have convictions in New Jersey that meet the following criteria may be eligible:

  1. At least two to five years have passed after the latest conviction and end of sentence (fines may be applicable)
  2. No outstanding charges
  3. Have not already expunged a record

Records will also not be revealed through certain background checks.

The expungement clinic is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Downs Hall (1000 Morris Ave.) and is available to both walk-ins and appointments.
