WATCH: Cranford Police Offer Tips To Avoid Car Theft, Burglary

With car thefts on the rise in Union County, the Cranford Police Department put together an informational video to help residents.

CRANFORD, NJ — Car thefts and burglaries are on the rise in Union County and Cranford Township is no exception.

To help residents know some warning signs and avoid becoming a target, the Cranford Police Department put together an informational video.

Many of the targeted cars are either unlocked or have keys still inside. Police said some of the best ways to prevent a theft or burglary is to keep all sets of key out of the car whenever you're not inside, as well as keeping the car locked.

Removing valuables was another focal point. Purses, laptops or other items of interest could catch the eye of someone, making the car a target.

The video also demonstrated how some high-end keyfobs can be used to see if a car is unlocked.
