East Brunswick Celebrates Muslim Heritage Month With Proclamation
The Mayor issued a proclamation to community members during Monday's Council meeting.
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – On Monday, the East Brunswick Town Council issued a proclamation designating January as “Muslim Heritage Month” in the township.
Mayor Brad Cohen read the proclamation at the meeting, noting that it comes on the heels of a statewide Muslim Heritage Month that was approved last year.
Democratic and Republican lawmakers unanimously supported the state resolution in both chambers.

WHEREAS, in April of 2023, Governor Phil Murphy signed a proclamation designating January as “Muslim Heritage Month” to promote awareness and appreciation of the Muslim community and their accomplishments in New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, there are an estimated 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide, approximately 3.45 million Muslim Americans who live across the nation, and over 300,000 living in New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, the Township of East Brunswick is home to a significant Muslim American population who represent widely diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds: and
WHEREAS, East Brunswick Township’s Muslims actively engage in charitable and public service. There are many Muslim businesses, youth groups, and organizations that help contribute to our economy and community; and
WHEREAS, the Township of East Brunswick and our nation have greatly benefited from Muslim Americans, especially through their rich cultures and traditions. Muslim Americans share their strong family values, dedication to education, generosity in charitable giving, devotion to public service, diversity in faith and creed that add strength to our democracy; and
WHEREAS, Muslim Americans are strong contributors to economic sectors and have particularly excelled in the areas of medicine, law, business, education, politics, government, military service, technology, science, culture and arts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and Township Council of the Township of East Brunswick, that January 2024 is hereby recognized as “Muslim Heritage Month.”
