Key elements of the safety initiative include:
- Lawn Sign Campaign: Eye-catching lawn signs placed in targeted neighborhoods to remind drivers to slow down.
- Radar Speed Notification Signs: Implemented by local police to alert motorists of their speed.
- Community Training: Local residents are trained to assist law enforcement by reporting speeding incidents, including vehicle descriptions and times of occurrence.
Slow Down in Our Town is a speed reduction campaign held in partnership between residents and local law enforcement, working together to coordinate the placement of lawn signs in targeted neighborhoods.

The signs are moved around the neighborhood periodically as studies show that signs permanently erected on streets become so commonplace that motorists often ignore them.
Additionally, awareness training is also provided to the participating residents and local enforcement.
Middlesex County had held a "Design-A-Sign" contest, inviting students in grades K-12 to submit designs for a sign that addressed speeding in residential areas.
Destiny Griggs, a 15-year-old from Monroe and a student at Middlesex County Magnet School in East Brunswick, submitted the winning entry. The slogan, "Slow Down in Our Town," was chosen as the name of the program.
