Former East Brunswick High School Teacher Stephen Michaud Dies At 86

Stephen Michaud was an English and Humanities teacher at the high school for 40 years.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Former East Brunswick High School teacher Stephen Michaud died on Oct. 26 at the age of 86.

Michaud was an English and Humanities teacher at the high school for 40 years.

“His love of books, poetry and prose was evident to all whom he encountered and his evident passion for art, film and literature was infectious,” according to his obituary. “His students would all agree that his class was a “must” senior elective everyone needed to take and more importantly, Stephen Michaud was a teacher whom you would never forget.”

Michaud was remembered for regularly taking his students on extracurricular trips to New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC and other places, where they would visit museums, attend concerts and plays, watch films, theatrical presentations, lectures and more.

These trips were part of the “magical and inspirational Michaud classroom experience.”

“This was all accomplished despite taking place after school hours, on weekends and often paid for out of Stephens own pocket. He was the most generous of men in both talent and treasure. He loved life and all of life loved him. To know him or to take his class was to see the beauty in each day through Stephen’s eyes,” the obituary said.

Born in 1936 in Philadelphia, Michaud joined the U.S. Army in 1954, becoming a member of the 11th Airborne, 503’rd Battalion stationed primarily in Germany, according to his obituary.

After being discharged from the military, Michaud attended Glassboro State Teachers College in Glassboro, New Jersey where he majored in English. Upon graduation, he accepted a position as an English teacher at East Brunswick High School, according to his obituary.

Visitation is on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Hazlet. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Interment will follow at Shoreland Memorial Garden Cemetery, Route 35, Hazlet.
