EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – East Brunswick is moving forward with the construction of the proposed ice rink. And if everything goes according to plan, a groundbreaking ceremony is expected in the fall, Mayor Brad Cohen said.

The township wanted to restrict who could apply to build the ice rink as it is specialized work. For this, they first needed to get the approval of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA). This portion was expected to go out in the bid document, but delays from the state prevented that from happening.

After looking at the documents the DCA advised the township that they needed two bids – one for the ice rinks and one for the buildings.

With all paperwork in place, the bids will go out and are expected to return to the township by July 2.

Cohen expressed his frustration at dealing with the state in the entire process which caused much delays to the project.

“The process is the part that is so infuriating. That's what makes me so thankful that here at the local government, we are really an example of how things can be done most efficiently,” Cohen said.
