Joan Klass, Former East Brunswick School Nurse, Dies At 80

Klass was a nurse at Hammarskjold Middle School from 1998 to 2009.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Joan Ruth Klass, who served as a nurse at Hammarskjold Middle School from 1998 to 2009, died on Saturday, the East Brunswick Education Association said. She was 80.

“Joan was a gentle, caring soul whose soft-spoken way made everyone feel better. Rest in peace sweet Joan,” the association said in a Facebook post.

Klass spent her formative years in Metuchen, where she graduated from Metuchen High School before attending the Rutgers College of Nursing. She later received an MBA at Rutgers University, according to her obituary published in Tuttle Funeral Homes.

Klass’ career spanned many years, with stints at JKF Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center and Wayne General Hospital. She served as President of the New Jersey Chapter of the Organization of Nurse Executives.

While working at Hammarskjold, Klass lived in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

Klass was a fan of the New York Giants and the New York Mets. She made a difference to all she met and was a “quintessential caregiver throughout her life,” according to her obituary.

Visitation will be held on April 13, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Tuttle Funeral Home, Route 10, Randolph, followed by a brief service. The burial will be at Nisky Cemetery, Bethlehem, PA.
