2 Hammonton Mosquito Samples Test Positive For West Nile Virus
Two mosquito samples collected in Hammonton have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to Atlantic County public health officials.
HAMMONTON, NJ — Two mosquito samples collected in Hammonton have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to Atlantic County public health officials.
Representatives from the Atlantic County Office of Mosquito Control collected the Hammonton samples on Aug. 17 from West End Avenue and Mill Run Drive. These are the second and third positive samples found in Atlantic County this year.
A sample collected in Somers Point earlier this month was the first to be confirmed positive for West Nile virus. There are no reported human cases of the virus at this time.

County public health and mosquito control officials are conducting mosquito surveillance, implementing additional control measures and providing educational materials to area residents and businesses.
Additionally, a ground spray was conducted on Friday morning for portions of Hammonton.

West Nile virus is carried by infected mosquitoes and can be transmitted to birds, animals and humans.
Atlantic County health officials are urging residents to reduce their risk and the spread of West Nile virus by reducing their exposure to mosquito bites by following these tips:
- Use an insect repellent whenever going outdoors
- Rid properties of mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water.
- Clean clogged gutters; check and repair screen doors.
