Atlantic City Woman Killed Helping Driver In Crash: Police

An Atlantic City woman who stopped to help a driver in a crash was struck and killed Wednesday night, police said.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — An Atlantic City woman who stopped to help a driver in a crash was struck and killed Wednesday night, police said.

A Jeep sport-utility vehicle driven by a 35-year-old city woman struck a center median on Route 30 near mile marker 55 just before 10 p.m., according to Atlantic City police.

The vehicle became disabled in the left lane. Several motorists, including Teresa Callaway, 57, stopped to help remove the woman from the vehicle, police said.

A Toyota Camry operated by a 19-year-old city woman approached the crash and lost control of her vehicle, causing those who were assisting in the crash to run to safety, police said.

The Toyota hit the Jeep and then struck Callaway, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Occupants of both vehicles were taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division with non-life threatening injuries.

The cause of the crashes is under investigation with assistance from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Atlantic City Fire Department, Absecon Fire Department, Absecon Police Department, Pleasantville Police Department and New Jersey Department of Transportation assisted at the scene of the crash. Both directions of Route 30 were closed for about four hours.
