Dad Lied To Cover Up Son's Role In Absecon Hit-And-Run: Police

Byron A. James said he was the driver in a hit-and-run that badly injured a man and killed his dog. But he was lying, cops say.

ABSECON, NJ — A Mays Landing man lied about who was actually driving the car to cover up his son's role in an Absecon hit-and-run that left a man with life-threatening injuries and killed a dog, authorities said.

The Nov. 30, 2024 hit-and-run hospitalized Syed Hoque, a 25-year-old Absecon resident, police said. Read more: Man, Dog Struck In Absecon Hit-And-Run: Police

The driver fled the scene and was later identified as Byron A. Jones, 52, police said. A passerby found Hoque and the dead dog in the street and called 911.

However, new details have emerged and authorities determined that Byron A. Jones faked his confession. Using digital forensic analysis and traditional measures, officers learned that the actual driver of the car that night was his son, Amir A. Jones, 20, also of Mays Landing.

Amir A. Jones was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim, motorist hitting a domestic animal required to stop, failure to report an accident and numerous motor vehicle offenses.
