Former NJ Police Captain, 47, Dies After Cancer Battle
Gary Jones retired in September after he received the diagnosis; he worked at a federal air marshal training center in retirement.
GALLOWAY, NJ - A longtime New Jersey law enforcement officer and Galloway resident has died after a battle with cancer.
Former Galloway Police Captain Gary Jones, 47, who spent 26 years on the force before retiring in September, passed away this week, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser for the family.
“He was a gift to all who knew him,” a fundraiser update reads.

“Our prayers are with Gary and the entire Jones family,” the Galloway Township Police Department said in a statement Monday. “Details of the arrangements will be announced once they are made.”
While being treated for back pain in May 2022, additional tests found cancer in Jones’ kidneys, spleen and liver, the GoFundMe page reads. He was not able to start chemotherapy right away as he required dialysis three days a week.

“Gary, 47 years old, has always been a healthy guy,” the fundraiser continues. “He is a loving father of two boys, Tyler and Josh and a wonderful husband to Abby.”
After retiring from the Galloway Township Police Department, Jones took a job at the Federal Air Marshal Training Center where he was a firearms custodian, according to his obituary.
“Gary spent his free time doing what he loved, shooting,” the obituary reads. “He was a competitive shooter and just loved being out on the range.”
The GoFundMe, which has raised over $17,200 as of Tuesday morning, will support the family’s expenses for melas, unpaid medical expenses, gas and more. The fundraiser is linked here.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Wimberg Funeral Home (211 E. Great Creek Road, Galloway). A service will follow at 4:30 p.m.
