Galloway Police Charge Man With Shooting Near School

Police arrested Michael Maggi, 57, for firing shots close to Pilgrim Academy

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ - Galloway Township police arrested a man on Thursday and charged him with firing shots near the Pilgrim Academy, which led to several schools being placed on lockdown, Detective Lt. Joseph Picard said.

Police responded to the school at 301 West Moss Mill Road at 9:32 a.m. on a report of gunshots fired outside the building. The school was immediately placed on lockdown, he said.

Officers secured the perimeter and interior of the school and confirmed that nobody was injured. Further investigation determined that a nearby resident had discharged several shots into a wooded area near the school.

Michael Maggi, 57, was taken into custody without incident. Police recovered numerous firearms and ammunition from his residence. Maggi was charged with risking widespread injury, disorderly conduct and harassment, Picard said.

Police advised all schools within Galloway Township and Port Republic to issue a shelter in place in order to keep the children inside the buildings, he said.

The Galloway Township Police Department was assisted by the New Jersey State Police and Richard Stockton University Police as well as the Galloway Township Ambulance Squad.

Maggi was taken to the Atlantic County Jail, Picard said.
