Seal Pup Rescued After Shark Attack In Atlantic County

The Grey seal pup, found in Longport, had several lacerations in a round pattern about the size of a dinner plate on his stomach.

LONGPORT, NJ — A young Grey seal pup is now happily recovering at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center following a shark attack.

The seal was the third admitted to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine this week when he was rescued on Feb. 10, officials shared in a Facebook post.

He was found very thin and badly injured laying on the beach in Longport, with a circle of lacerations on his abdomen about the circumference of a dinner plate. He also had several small puncture wounds on the left side of his mouth.

The seal was immediately taken to the Center, where his wounds were treated and he was fed. He weighed 37.8 pounds.

A medical examination determined that his injuries were likely from a shark attack. Oral and topical medication is being given along with pain medication.

"We are very happy to report that this pup is already showing interest in his food and is starting to eat on his own!" The Marine Mammal Stranding Center said.
