Councilman Warns of Credit Card Fraud, Theft

Councilman Justin DiPisa, police commissioner, says even the most careful people can find themselves victim.

Councilman Justin DiPisa, police commissioner, addressed the public at the Tuesday night council meeting on the dangers of credit card fraud and theft sharing his own personal account of how a simple stop at a gas station almost became a major headache.

Even the most careful people can find they have been victims of having thier credit card number stolen, DiPisa said.

He and his wife are always careful to watch their credit card and never it out of their site when making a purchase. So when their credit card company called to verify a $2,500 purchase for computer equipment out of state they learned that even though they always set out to be careful it's not always enough.

Through investigation they had found that a gas station attendant had used a handscanner to steal their credit card number. He said the incident was later seen on video and the attendant had been fired. DiPisa did not specify where this incident took place.

DiPisa said had his credit company not called to verify the purchase they would have never known what happened. They were not charged for the fraudulent purchase, he said.
