Sofia's Mediterranean Grill Opens Its Doors

Former owner of Greek restaurant in Cliffside Park opens new restaurant on the Boulevard in Hasbrouck Heights.

The wait is over. Sofia's Mediterranean Grill is now open.

The brand new restaurant, right on the Boulevard at the former Maria's Kitchen location, opened its doors Tuesday afternoon to the Hasbrouck Heights community.

Sofia Youssis, who is the Sofia behind the name, previously owned It's Greek to Me on Anderson Avenue in Cliffside Park for 23 years. She said her restaurant was not part of the It's Greek to Me franchise. She had started it small with just four tables and the business grew and grew, she says.

She is bringing some of the same ideas, and of course her recipes, she became known for to the new restaurant in Hasbrouck Heights, a town she loves, she says. Youssis says many of her former customers hail from the Heights area and often told her they hoped she’d one day open a restaurant in this area.

Sofia’s Mediterranean Grill will serve many of the Greek delicacies from Souvlaki to Baklava she says.

She has partnered with her son-in-law Nick Belegrinos in this new venture. Belegrinos says the restaurant offers fresh ingredients all cooked on premises. “Sofia is on premises and that is what counts,” he says referring to her reputation.

The restaurant will be open six days a week, closing on Mondays for the time being she says. Youssis says an official ribbon cutting ceremony will be planned for later this month.

Youssis says she looks forward to serving the Hasbrouck Heights community.
