Youngsters Get Lesson in Law Enforcement

The 13th annual Junior Police Academy gets underway this week.

School may be out but a group of youngsters are working hard all week long getting a full hands-on experience in law enforcement as they take part in the 13th annual Junior Police Academy.

The Junior Police Academy, which is presented by the , meets for one full week, usually during the first week of summer break. The students spend each day taking part in a full itinerary of activities and drills exposing them to what real police work is really like. Approximately 60 kids registered for the program, according to the police department.

Led by Sgt. Joseph Rinke and Middle School teacher Michael Stillman, the students will learn about firearms and ballistics, motor vehicle stops, the bomb squad. They will learn about the U.S. Marshalls from a guest speaker.

The students will also get a tour of the Bergen County Jail later this week.

Friday the program concludes with a BBQ and a graduation ceremony that evening where they will receive their certificates for completing the program.
