Witnesses told police that a man — later identified as Troy Timberlake, 31 — was "yelling and cursing at children and elderly people, and then began hitting people."

Witness pointed Timberlake out to police, they said.

Police determined that Timberlake was cursing at people who walked by the gazebo in the center of the park, "including one woman who he also spit on." When she turned to address him, "he punched her and then followed her out of the park and punched her multiple times, knocking her unconscious," a police spokesperson said.

Timberlake then approached a man and hit him on the back of his head, near one of the playgrounds in the park, police said.

"Witnesses and officers believed by doing this, Timberlake put multiple children in danger," police said.

Hoboken EMS/Volunteer Ambulance Corps arrived to treat the victims, one of whom was taken to a local hospital for further treatment, police said. (A woman later said the victim is recovering; see followup story here.)

The park is across the street from Hoboken's hospital and within walking distance of several school buildings.

Timberlake was taken to police headquarters "where he continued to yell, scream, and act aggressively," according to police.

He refused to allow officers to fingerprint and photograph him, they say.

He was charged with aggravated assault, endangering an injured victim, child cruelty, and refusal to submit fingerprinting, police said.

He was then taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility, police said.

The city of Hoboken has set up a public safety forum next Wednesday at City Hall to meet with concerned residents. It will be held at 5:30 at 94 Washington St.
