How Did Drivers, Walkers Handle Start Of Hoboken Road Closure Monday? See PHOTOS

One councilperson was concerned about gridlock for drivers when roads closed in north Hoboken for 3 months. How'd they do Monday?

HOBOKEN, NJ — As workers add anti-flooding structures to streets in northern and southern Hoboken, a street and alley near the city's northern entrance closed for three months starting Monday.

2nd Ward Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher said in her newsletter that she was worried about gridlock, and she and the city sent several messages out over the weekend to remind drivers and pedestrians of the change.

But Monday morning, from 8:15 a.m. to around 9 a.m., traffic appeared to flow smoothly, with only a little backup at times. Police were around to direct traffic.

The city said, "Sidewalks will remain open on the south side of 15th Street between Park Avenue and Garden Street as well as between Garden Street and Bloomfield Street; and the west side of Garden Street from 14th Street to 15th Street. Garage access will be maintained."

On Monday morning, police were directing traffic, and there was only slight backup on nearby roads, including Park Avenue, which runs through Hoboken north to Weehawken.

Since the area is near at least one charter school, the city had said that starting on Tuesday, Sept. 3, the city will designate both sides of
Bloomfield Street and the north side of 14th Street for school pickup and dropoff from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
