Gov. Christie Calls State of Emergency

Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency on Thursday afternoon, because of the impending hurricane.

No evacuations were called for Hoboken as of Thursday afternoon, but Mayor Dawn Zimmer has urged residents to leave town if possible. Heavy flooding is expected once the hurricane hits Hoboken.

The state of emergency mobilizes the National Guard to address the hurricane preparedness.

A high tide and a new moon are causing the levels of the Hudson to be higher on Sunday, which could worsen the flooding.

It's still unclear in what capacity hurricane Irene will hit, but it may be a level 1 or 2 when it arrives at the North East.
