An interesting fact about the Island of Puerto Rico is that it only has 518 years of history, for it was during Christopher Columbus' second voyage to America in November 19, 1493, that his ships encountered the island of Puerto Rico. Columbus took possession of the Island like a treasure, named it San Juan Bautista, and for over 400 years, Puerto Rico became one of Spain’s many possessions.
Today, 518 years later, the Island still commemorates the discovery and the beginning of Puerto Rico’s history and cultural heritage.
