HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken residents go all out for Halloween, decorating their stoops and giving away scads of candy on some blocks during the holiday. The trick-or-treating often starts just after the city's traditional Ragamuffin Parade on Oct. 31 each year.

This year, the parade lineup will begin at 10th and Washington streets at 4 p.m., said city spokesperson Marilyn Baer. The actual stepping off will start at 4:30 p.m. The parade is generally a mix of costumed residents and bands.

Businesses often give out candy in the afternoon and evening, as do many of the brownstones.

The parade will slowly move south on Washington Street, ending at Fifth Street.

"Due to declining attendance rates in previous years, the city will not host a costume contest," said Baer. The contest was part of the tradition until last year, and it was held virtually for one year during the pandemic.

The parade was canceled completely in 2020. Otherwise, it has been a tradition in the mile-square city since at least 1963. READ MORE: Ragamuffin Parade Returns For 2021.

Charges In Traffic

"Due to the parade, vehicular traffic will be diverted," Baer said. "NJ Transit buses will run on an alternate route during the parade. Northbound buses will operate on Bloomfield Street and Southbound buses will operate on Hudson Street.

"The Hoboken Police Department reminds drivers to reduce their speed, be alert for trick-or-treaters, turn on headlights, and stop before
crosswalks. The city of Hoboken does not permit block parties on Halloween and reminds residents to walk on sidewalks and to cross streets only in crosswalks. Avoid gathering, walking, or crowding in the streets. Officers will be forced to close streets when too many pedestrians create a safety hazard for themselves, and for drivers."

In past years, police set up near Eleventh Street, Park, Garden, and Bloomfield uptown, where kids crowded the most well-decorated brownstones in search of goodies.
