HOBOKEN, NJ — Will visitors to Hoboken continue to get free parking on Sundays? The City Council is considering eliminating the graits spots in some areas of the business district.

The council voted to introduce the change last month, and will hold a hearing and then a final vote at their meeting this Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher said in her newsletter on Tuesday, "The ordinance proposes ending the longstanding Hoboken amenity of free parking on Sundays in Hoboken 'business areas,' which are vaguely defined as 'areas of the city that have, or are in close proximity to, a high concentration of retail or commercial uses on the ground floor.' She noted, "I have advocated for amending this to clearly specify the areas it pertains to—for example, Washington St. from Newark to 14th, making it limited hours only – say 12-5 p.., or removing this provision altogether before the final vote."

The city is also considering increasing the cost of visitor parking permits, including raising the 24-hour permits from $6 to $8.
