HOBOKEN, NJ — Residents were taken by surprise on Thursday when the Port Authority announced that it will close the Hoboken PATH train station — a major commuter hub to Manhattan — for almost all of February 2025.

The PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) trains bring thousands of commuters each day from the Hoboken and Jersey City waterfront to midtown Manhattan and the World Trade Center. Riders pay $2.75 each way.

The agency said they would host three public information sessions and provide transportation alternatives.

"The Port Authority of NY & NJ today announced the Hoboken station will temporarily close starting on Jan. 30, 2025, for approximately 1 month for significant track & station upgrades," the city of Hoboken said Thursday.

The station will close at 11:59 p.m. Jan. 30 and reopen at 5 a.m. on Feb. 25 for "significant track and station upgrades," said the agency.

Commuters can take NJ Transit buses, NJ Transit trains, and New York Waterway ferries to the city, but the prices are higher and commute sometimes longer.

Residents expressed concerns about the closure on the city's Facebook page.

"Ugh I can already picture the lines for the 126 [bus]," wrote one woman.

"Not to state the obvious but you know this will take longer than a month," wrote another commenter.

A third noted that the buses stop running in the wee hours, while the trains run all night.

Public information sessions will be held in Hoboken, Jersey City, and online on Nov. 12, Nov. 13, and Dec. 10, respectively.
