Hoboken Police to Set Up DWI Checkpoints on Halloween Night

Drivers will have to pass through a checkpoint on Observer Highway starting at 12 a.m. No designated driver? Here's how to find a safe ride.

Every year, hundreds of ghouls, goblins, and super heroes swarm Hoboken’s bars and clubs to celebrate Halloween in style. A DWI checkpoint will set up on Observer Highway (Eastbound) at Willow Avenue, so that Hoboken Police can keep a watchful eye on the festivities.

Police will be conducting sobriety checks on the highway from approximately midnight until 4 a.m. as many begin to leave the city.

This year, the haunted holiday falls on a Friday, giving the nightlife scene an extra boost, as many may choose to keep the party going into the early hours of the morning.

“The goal of the program is to reduce citizen involvement/injury due to D.W.I.-related collisions,” Hoboken Police stated. “Through implementation of this, and similar events, the Hoboken Police Department hopes to significantly reduce accidents, injuries and property damage throughout our city.”

The Police department added that informational pamphlets on preventing drunk driving will be handed out to drivers at the scene.

Where to Find a Safe Ride

Before you decide on bunny ears or devil horns, choose a designated driver. Here are some helpful resources if you find yourself without a safe way home.

There are several designated driver/safe ride services that can help you find a safe ride home in a pinch. Recommended by the NHTSA, Sober Sam is often the go to option for those who need a safe ride. For about the cost of taxi, a Sober Sam driver will get you AND your car home, even with a moment’s notice. You can reach Sober Sam at 856-520-5679.

Other safe ride options include, Be My Driver, which will supply a designated driver who will pick you up, drive your car for you, wait, and take you home when you’re ready, all for $28 an hour. To see a list of sober ride services, click here.

Those who are traveling in and out of the city can also take the PATH or NJ Transit. Click here to find a scheduled train that works for you.
