HOBOKEN, NJ — After Hoboken police stopped a man for speeding on a sidewalk on his ebike last week, they found out he was wanted in Jersey City for several offenses, police said.

Corey Lamont Cooke, 46, was charged last Monday with three charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and other charges.

Police said that on Sept. 16, around 1:15 p.m., Police Officer Arturo Gonzalez was at the intersection of Washington and Third Streets when he observed a man riding an e-bike on the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and stopped him.

According to police, the man the man gave a fake name, then attempted to flee on the bike. Gonzalez grabbed the bike, but the man jumped off and ran.

Police Officers Gonzalez and Joseph Lupo ran after him and ordered him to stop multiple times, police say.

The man then jumped the fence near the Hudson River, threatening to jump in.

Several police tried to stop him but suffered from minor injuries during the chase and apprehension, police said.

Cooke was safely placed under arrest.

Police said, "It was discovered he had warrants out of Jersey City for failing to comply with sex offender registration and notification laws, and for simple assault."

He was charged in Hoboken for obstructing the administration of law, three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and hindering apprehension. He also received a summons for operating an electric bicycle on a public sidewalk.

Cooke was taken to an area hospital for a pre-existing condition. Once treated, he was to be taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
