State Approves Permits for Spectra Pipeline

The pipeline is widely opposed by local politicians.

The Department of Environmental Protection has issued permits for the proposed Spectra pipeline, which is supposed to run from New York to New Jersey, close to Hoboken's downtown border.

More permits from the federal government are needed before the project can go through.

According to a DEP spokesman, the Spectra Energy Corp.—the company that wants —has made changes to the plans and now fulfill the state's environmental requirements.

Local politicians have opposed the pipeline for environmental and safety concerns. Officials in Bayonne and Jersey City—where the pipeline will also be built—have also opposed the pipeline.

According to a story about the matter in the Wall Street Journal the pipeline "could carry 800 million cubic feet of natural gas per day."

The pipeline would run parallel to the PATH tracks and is proposed to be built very close to the Hoboken border.
