Turning the City Green; 200 New Trees To Be Planted

203 empty tree lots will be filled this year.

There's a  new tree on the corner of Sixth Street and Park Avenue and her name is April.

That name was given to the tree by  a group of Calabro students, who helped and witnessed the planting of the new tree on Friday morning, in celebration of national arbor day and Earth Day.

The tree is the first of 200 new trees that will be planted around town this year. Local business The Taco Truck  is donating 50 trees, and the city is donating 50 more. Later this year, Mayor Dawn Zimmer said, the city will is planning to plant 100 more. There are 203 empty tree empty pits around town.

The Calabro students have promised to take care of the tree and make sure to water it.

“Each and everyone of you is an example,” Zimmer told the kids, “we want everybody to adopt a tree.”

Jason Scott, The Taco Truck owner said he was happy to join the students in celebrating earth day. He also announced that TTT has launched a “Tacos for Trees” program.

Superintendent of Schools Mark Toback said he hoped the students would remember the planting of this tree as they grow up in Hoboken, sharing an anecdote from his youth when he helped plant a tree in front of his parents’ house.

The first 100 empty pits—which can be found all over town—will be filled with new trees in May. The tree that was planted on Friday morning is a small leaf red maple.

Students from Stevens Institute of Technology have also helped cleaning out some pits. The audit of trees in town was done by the Shade Tree Commission.
