Week in Review: Hoboken's Best Local Stories

Hoboken's downtown is named the best in North Jersey, volunteers are called to arms, and a short film festival begins at the museum.

Hoboken’s Downtown Named Best in Northern Jersey
The New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NJ) has named Hoboken a winner in the 2014 People’s Choice Awards for Great Downtowns in New Jersey. The winner was determined by the 11,421 online ballots cast by the public over the past five weeks. Hoboken competed against Downtown Morristown, Historic Downtown Jersey City and Montclair Center to receive the top honors in Northern New Jersey.

Hoboken Calls All Residents to Community Emergency Response Teams
The City of Hoboken invites members of the community to join its 100-strong and growing Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). State-certified trainers will hold a series of free CERT classes this fall for up to 60 participants. Following the disastrous events of Hurricane Sandy, CERT Coordinator Lou Casciano was honored as a Community Preparedness and Resilience “Champion of Change” by the White House. The application deadline is Friday, October 10, 2014.

Hoboken Historical Museum Hosts Black Maria Festival
Last week, the Hoboken Historical continued its relationship with the prestigious Black Maria Film Festival, now in its 33rd year as a juried competition of independent short film and video works. The festival began on Sept. 30. The next installments are coming up on Oct. 28 and Nov. 25. A $5 donation guarantees admission and light refreshments.
