Freehold Regional $14.46M Bond Referendum Likely To Pass

FREEHOLD, NJ — The referendum to approve a $14.46 million bond for school roofing and pavement improvements will likely be approved, according to unofficial results.

The "yes" votes are 36,450 against 25,518 "no" votes, as of Thursday afternoon, with all 130 districts having been reported.

Some mail-in votes will still have to be counted and the Monmouth County Clerk will have to certify the results before they are official.

The funds will be used for "critical" and "urgent infrastructure needs, the school district explained in a website that was launched to explain what the current conditions in schools were and how they would be improved.

"There are no extravagant projects included in this proposal. We are focusing solely on necessary roofing and paving work in all six high schools," Superintendent of the Freehold Regional High School District Charles Sampson said in a video presentation.

According to the official, if the referendum passes the state of New Jersey will pick up 40 percent of the cost, bringing it down to $8.68 million.

If, however, the majority of voters say "no" then the money to complete the work will come from the district's annual operating budget, which will "significantly impact district programs/ services," according to the website.
