Gas Main Leak Repaired in Hazlet

Residents near Highland Avenue and Stone Road were without gas for a portion of Thursday after a broken gas main was discovered.

New Jersey Natural Gas spokesman Michael Kinney said the Hazlet Police Department received a call at 10:27 a.m. after people in the area spelled gas. Kinney said NJNG had someone on the scene within 5 minutes. An initial assessment discovered a leak in the 2-inch steel main.  The leak was a result of corrosion.

Workers  excavated the area and “retired” about 200 feet of the steel main and installed 50 feet of plastic main.

About 7 homes were evacuated, said Kinney, and one resident was without service while repairs were made. Residents were allowed to return to their homes at 2:30 p.m.  Work was completed at around midnight and service was restored, said Kinney.
