HOLMDEL, NJ — Holmdel Township has officially dedicated part of the Garden State Parkway Access Road as “Billy DiMaio Boulevard” in honor of William "Billy" DiMaio, a Holmdel resident who was killed in the New Year’s Day terrorist attack in New Orleans.
DiMaio, 25, was a Holmdel High School graduate, notable lacrosse player, and volunteer who was identified as one of 14 people killed when a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s Day revelers on Bourbon Street in January.
During a ceremony held last week, township officials (including Mayor Brian Foster, Deputy Mayor Kim LaMountain, and Committeeman Rocco Impreveduto) unveiled two signs designating the new road name.

The dedication was formally established in March through Township Committee Ordinance 2025-01.
“Billy DiMaio was an integral part of our community, a young man who gave back to the town he loved by volunteering his time to coach the next generation of lacrosse players,” Foster said. “This dedication ensures that his positive impact and legacy will be remembered by everyone who drives along this road.”

LaMountain echoed Foster’s sentiments, adding that DiMaio’s life was “a testament to community spirit and passion.”
“While his death was a profound loss, we hope this tribute will provide some comfort to his loved ones and serve as a constant reminder of the vibrant young man who meant so much to Holmdel,” LaMountain said.
Following DiMaio’s graduation from Holmdel High School in 2017, he went on to attend Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, where he continued his lacrosse career as a Griffin and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration & Management and a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership.
After graduating from college, he went on to become an account executive with Audacy Inc. According to a report from Nola, DiMaio was visiting New Orleans on New Year’s Day to celebrate the new year and hang out with friends attending the Sugar Bowl.
In the time since his passing, DiMaio has been remembered by community members as a loving son, brother, teammate and friend.
“Billy played the game with great passion, which was felt by everyone that shared the field with him,” Chestnut Hill College Lacrosse said of DiMaio in an online statement.
“He brought a genuine love for lacrosse and an infectious energy with him everywhere he played, from Long Island to Holmdel to Chestnut Hill," the statement continued. "The impact he had on our program was profound, but pales in comparison to the unforgettable impression he made on everyone who knew him.”
In a statement posted to their Facebook page, Holmdel High School Boys Lacrosse mourned DiMaio as well, describing him as “a remarkable young man on and off the field.”
“Our lacrosse community has suffered an unimaginable loss,” the statement said. “Billy was a remarkable young man on and off the field. All of us in the Holmdel community are devastated by this sad news. Please keep the DiMaio family in your thoughts and prayers.”
In his obituary, family described DiMaio as "a rare soul, defined by his humility, kindness, humor and boundless love for those around him. Anyone fortunate enough to meet him instantly felt the warmth of his positive energy and vibrant spirit."
"Billy’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and inspiration. As he looks down on us now, we know he’s smiling, making everyone laugh in heaven, and saying, 'Let’s go, family—time to get to work!'" His family said. "Rest in peace, Billy. You will be forever missed and endlessly loved."
The newly named “Billy DiMaio Boulevard” can be found along the Holmdel portion of the Garden State Parkway Access Road.
