Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Train in Hazlet

NJ Transit suspended service for the North Jersey Coastline after a man was fatally injured near the Hazlet station early Tuesday.

NJ Transit suspended service this morning for the North Jersey Coastline after a man was struck and fatally injured near the Hazlet station.

At approximately 5:25 a.m. Tuesday morning, an adult male “trespasser” was struck and killed by a New York-bound train by Bethany Road in Hazlet, according to William Smith, the senior public information officer for NJ Transit.

There were approximately 125 customers and crew on board the train at the time, Smith says. There were no other reported injuries.

Rail service was suspended for the North Jersey Coastline in both directions between Red Bank and Aberdeen-Matawan due to the incident. NJ Transit provided substitute bus service between these stations. Rail service was restored at 7:35 a.m. with delays reported of 15 to 30 minutes.

NJ Transit Police remain at the scene leading the investigation, Smith said.

A 17-year-old man was killed near the same station on September 1, after authorities say he appeared to have stepped out in front of the oncoming train.
