Board of Ed. Candidate Filing Deadline is Tuesday

The deadline for candidates to register for the Livingston Board of Education election this November is Tuesday.

Candidates must submit a nominating petition in order to get their names on the November ballot. Petitions must be filled out by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, and delivered in person to the Essex County Clerk's Office, at 465 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Room 246, Newark. Regular hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

School-board nominating petitions for the November election cannot be submitted to the local school district office.

There are two seats on the Livingston Board of Education, which come with three-year terms. The annual school election will be held on Nov. 5, the same date as the general election. 

Nominating petitions can be found in the photo gallery of this article; picked up at the Business Office of the Livingston Public Schools, at 11 Foxcroft Drive; or found online at the New Jersey School Boards Association's website.

The NJSBA also offers a Candidate Kit, which includes the nominating petition, information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy and the role of a school board member. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included in the kit. The legal requirements to become a member of the Board of Education are as follows:

• Be able to read and write.
• Hold U.S. citizenship and one year's residency in the school district.
• Be registered to vote in the district before filing the nominating petition.
• Have no interest in any contract with, or claim against, the board.
• Not hold office as mayor or member of the municipal governing body.
• Not simultaneously hold two elective offices.
• Not be disqualified from membership for the conviction of certain crimes. (Within 30 days of election or appointment to the board, a member must undergo a criminal history background investigation through the State Department of Education.
