LIVINGSTON, NJ — Livingston is among the New Jersey towns that nailed down a certification from Sustainable Jersey as part of the group’s latest cycle.

Livingston earned a bronze level certification from the group, which is made up of a network and movement of municipalities, schools and school districts that work collectively to bring about a “sustainable New Jersey.”

According to a statement from township officials, some of the initiatives that helped Livingston land its latest bronze rating include:

  • Permanent drug disposal boxes installed in the lobby of the Police Department
  • Energy tracking and management within the township
  • Creation of the Seed Library at the Livingston Public Library

The certification not only distinguishes Livingston as a “green and sustainable community,” but can also put the township in a favorable position when competing for environmental grants.

Mayor Al Anthony accepted recognition for Livingston’s sustainability efforts during a Sustainable Jersey panel at the New Jersey League of Municipalities annual conference in Atlantic City on Nov. 19.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in our recertification efforts,” Anthony said. “This was a vigorous process that we’ve been working on all year, and I commend everyone who helped us along the way, including the Business Improvement District, the Livingston Environmental Commission, Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors, the Livingston Public Library, and numerous municipal departments and individuals.”

“It’s great to be back on the certification list,” the mayor added. “This honor is especially satisfying because sustainability and preserving the environment are ideals that have been near to my heart – both personally and professionally – for decades.”
