12 Livingston High Seniors Make National Merit Scholarship Semifinals

Twelve Livingston High School seniors are among the semifinalists named in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The dozen local students are among 16,000 students who were named from across the country. About 90 percent of the students are expected to advance to finalists, where they will then be eligible for about 8,000 scholarships awarded nationally.

“This is the most semifinalists we’ve had in a few years,” said Livingston High School Principal Mark Stern last week. “Congratulating each of you is a fine end to the first week of school.”

    • The semifinalists are selected based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in the fall of their junior year. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools took the exam. Those chosen as semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of high school seniors.

    The scholarship competition is run by the National Merit Scholarship Corp., a not-for-profit organization established in 1955.
