Livingston Thrift Shop Offers Recycled Goods at Bargain Prices

According to its proprietors, St Peter's Episcopal Church Thrift Shop - a Livingston tradition for more than 50 years - is a "bargain hunter's paradise."

In 1955, parishioner Alice Skeels, suggested using space in the new school building to start a Thrift Shop where people could bring discarded clothing and other household items to be recycled. Today, approximately 20 women and men come out on Tuesdays to accept, sort, price and sell merchandise.

While games, puzzles and kitchen items are plentiful, most of the merchandise is clothing for all members of the family. On a recent Tuesday, a Talbots sweater was priced at $4. Seven for All Mankind jeans were priced at $4, as well, while a Lilly Pulitzer tote bag cost $2. Children's shorts cost $1.50 - $2.

"I almost never miss a Tuesday," said a shopper who identified herself only as Lillian. "It's like Christmas shopping all year long."

The Thrift Shop is open each Tuesday from 10am – 4 p.m.
